A compost heap in the produce aisle?

In time for Earth Day on April 22, a grocery store in Oregon has begun composting its vegetable and fruit scraps to keep them from clogging landfills. In a team effort with the city of Eugene, Price Chopper Foods is placing 200 pounds a day of biodegradable waste into two 7-foot-diameter Earth Tubs. The waste is then chopped and mixed with wood chips and kept at 140 degrees F.; the finished compost takes about 10 weeks. The first batch went to a community garden. Future loads will be made available to gardeners.
