Rain after the rain has ended

May 17, 1999

The birds shake loose

with random patter

drops caught in limbs,

crooks of trees,

and strands of drooping clematis.

In a wet flurry they swoop

down from perches

into puddles, their wings

blue oars paddling

small ponds

while the jay scales his notes

like the gondolier's song

skimming along

the canals of Venice.
