Adopt a puppy

In a Philadelphia animal shelter, Parker, a 3-1/2-month-old mixed-breed dog, runs around his pen chasing a ball as he awaits adoption and a new home. In the past, many families who might enjoy owning a dog like Parker wouldn't have known he was available unless they made weekly trips to an animal shelter.

But now anyone with a computer can view videos of adoptable puppies (and, occasionally, kittens) in 21 cities around the country.

Accompanying the pictures are the dog's name, age, sex, and breed, as well as where to adopt it, and the hours and phone number of the shelter or humane society.

The Greater Humane Society of Miami was the first organization to display dogs at Thepuppycam.com (www.thepuppycam.com), and has seen its adoptions rise ever since.
