Window boxes for all seasons
October 20, 1999
There's no reason you can't continue to enjoy your home's window boxes even in fall. Replace annuals with brightly colored leaves, Indian corn, small pumpkins, and squash. Or fill the box with stalks of dried wild grasses and hydrangea blooms. Another good combination is orange-berried pyracantha branches, silver thyme, or Dusty Miller, and knobby white gourds. You don't even need an actual window box. Hollow miniature pumpkins, fill each of them with a flowering kale plant, and line up on a windowsill.
