Best Web sites for kids
October 20, 1999
How do parents find kid-friendly sites on the Internet? Some things to look for:
*Make sure the site has a privacy policy and requires permission before gathering information from children. Also that chat rooms are regularly monitored.
*See if the site lets kids participate in activities on and off the computer (not just read text or look at pictures). Does the site engage the child's imagination and help him or her build new skills?
*Look for playful learning - using graphics, sound, and video - that helps kids learn to master technology.
*Don't be dazzled by special effects that may ultimately be frustrating to young surfers.
