Retirement roles
November 3, 1999
Former President Jimmy Carter is the best role model for retirees, say 43 percent of those who participated in a poll by Peter D. Hart Research Associates about the changing role of older Americans in society.
More than half the respondents say that being of service in the community will be an important part of their retirement plans. Seniors say they are most interested in raising funds for churches and schools and also working with children.
When asked to choose between approaches to retirement, 65 percent of those polled said they saw it as a new chapter in life, a time to begin new activities, set new goals, and be involved.
