Celebrating rarely seen treasure

March 13, 2000

Art and history lovers now have a new way to explore America's rich past. 'To Conserve a Legacy,' currently at the Art Institute of Chicago (through April 30), brings together art from the collections of six historically black colleges and universities. The traveling show, which spans more than 100 years of American art, presents more than 200 paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, and sculptures. Most of the works are by celebrated African-American artists.
