SHOWS WORTH NOTING FOR JAN. 13-19
Listings are not necessarily recommended by the Monitor. All times Eastern, check local listings.
Sunday 01/14
The Great Gatsby (A&E, 8-10 p.m., repeated Jan. 20): A lot more believable than the first movie version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, yet this one also demonstrates that a great book does not always make a great movie. The subtlety of F. Scott Fitzgerald's prose is lost, and the story is not as gripping as he made it seem. Still, it's worth a gander, and Mira Sorvino makes a charming Daisy.
Monday 01/15
Elvis: That's the Way It Is - Special Edition (Turner Classic Movies, 8-9:50 p.m.): A documentary with lots of never-before-seen shots, including his off-stage behavior. Part of a month-long tribute to the king of rock 'n' roll.
Thursday 01/18
Mystery! Touching Evil III (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): Robson Green stars in this four-part murder mystery as Detective. Dave Creegan pursues a serial killer whose real agenda is too weird for the other cops to grasp. Fascinating, but it does include some explicit forensic material.
