Horn Book Award Winners

Winners of the Horn Book Awards for Excellence in Children's Literature were announced last week. The authors and illustrations will each receive $500 at a ceremony in Burlington, Vt., on Oct. 1.
Fiction and Poetry
"Carver: A Life in Poems," by Marilyn Nelson (Front Street), ages 10 and up. A biography in verse of George Washington Carver.
Nonfiction
"The Longitude Prize," by Joan Dash, illustrated by Dusan Petricic (Frances Foster), ages 9-12. A history of an English clockmaker's efforts to invent and claim credit for a prized navigational tool.
Picture Book
"Cold Feet," by Cynthia DeFelice, illustrated by Robert Andrew Parker (DK Ink), ages 5-8. A spooky Scottish yarn with ghoulish slapstick.
