New Jersey tops most-expensive list

Americans spent an average of $683.27 per vehicle to insure their automobiles in 1999, according to a recent study by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

But drivers, on average, paid less for auto insurance in 1999 than they did in 1998, when the average expenditure was $704.09 per car.

In 1999, consumers in New Jersey paid the most on average for their auto insurance ($1,033.88 per car), while drivers in North Dakota paid the least ($401.55 per car).
