Slant light, fall
December 9, 2004
In imperative mood,
the hawking of crows outlasts
afternoon, our evening walk
followed by their beady foresight.
Trunks and limbs of river trees
are emerging prominent again,
their Braille of furrow in relief
against slant light.
Sudden quickness: a small brown owl
alights in a cottonwood -
turns to bark.
