Goalie
December 15, 2004
The lightning limbs of goalie Knight
thrust left, strike right; they block the sight
of these inferior, tepid players
whose slapshots speed but have no fight.
He wears a mask of white, blank leering,
callous to even home fan cheering.
Visiting skaters do their best
but cannot pierce this phantom sneering.
Periods ebb, the referees whistle;
the penalty box fills, coaches bristle.
The goalie crouches in his lair;
he guards the score with rank dismissal.
As buzzers sound, players dissemble;
the Gorgon goalie makes big men tremble.
