Livin' on Tulsa time
David S. Hauck spent a week in Tulsa, Okla.
Where did you go? Tulsa, in the heart of Oklahoma's green country.
What did you do? The gem of Tulsa is the Gilcrease Museum, home to the largest collection of western-American art in the world. You can practically feel the tumbleweed blowing through the galleries full of works by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, and Frederic Remington, who capture the open expanse of America's uncharted frontier. (Eighteen of Remington's 22 bronzes are at Gilcrease.) There's also a signature portrait of President James Madison by Charles Wilson Peale.
Where did you eat? McGill's, on Yale Ave., the newest of the restaurant's two locations. Menu favorites include orange roughy, jumbo butterflied shrimp, and a juicy Kansas City strip. Most entrees are under $20.
What are the shops like? The Riverwalk along the Arkansas River is Tulsa's first step toward creating a San Antonio-like walking mall and shopping area. Our favorite store: Azur Couture, a trendy women's boutique with something for everyone - $52 deconstructed jackets and $550 handbags by Isabella Fiore. Men should try Chrome on 18th Street for jeans and hip Ben Sherman sweaters.
