In a televised speech Monday night on immigration reform, President Bush is expected to call for deployment of National Guard troops along the Mexican border. Depending on what is proposed, some defense officials estimate that at least 3,500 troops could be required. The speech will be the first Bush has made on domestic policy from the Oval Office.
The military has not followed its own regulations in allowing soldiers with serious mental health problems to fight in Iraq, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported Sunday. The newspaper said records accessed by using the Freedom of Information Act, along with personal interviews, revealed numerous cases in which troops with psychological challenges were not screened, treated, or replaced as called for.
