In the first round of the World Cup that ends this week, Argentina scored six goals against underdogs Serbia-Montenegro. Ecuador and Ghana beat favored nations in their respective groups, and 20-year-old Spaniard Fernando Torres has enthralled both fans and rivals with his elegant footwork and overall mastery with the ball.
Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano once said that he had become a "beggar for good soccer." In the past two weeks fans have echoed Mr. Galeano's plea: 'A pretty move, for the love of God.' " But above all, they have been yearning for the miracle of a brilliant goal.
