I just finished A Salty Piece of Land by Jimmy Buffet. What a ride it was! His writing style and cast of characters remind me of another favorite author, Tom Robbins. It was a wonderful way to escape the Texas heat.

I'm reading John Updike's Terrorist. Updike probably could've enlisted a grandchild to take a look at some of the dialogue between teenagers in this one, but his observations of American life are still the best.

The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East by Robert Fisk is a hefty tome, and one reviewer said it contained "more about the Middle East than many people want to know." However, given how much of our lives and treasure are involved in that part of the world, we need to know what Fisk can tell us.
