I stumbled upon The Good Life: The Moral Individual in an Antimoral World, by Cheryl Mendleson, on the "Just Arrived" shelf at the library. It's a clearly written, intellectually rigorous book describing the moral mentality that underlies Western culture, and democracy's dependence on a minority of moral individuals. It's filled with examples from modern and historical politicians and others.
