The Back Page by Val Lauder is one of the most engrossing memoirs I've read in a long time. Lauder started as a copy girl in 1944 at the Chicago Daily News, and the book tells of her 8 years there including covering the death of Roosevelt, through the Normandy Invasion and the Japanese surrender and beyond. This gives an engrossing view of the energy of the newsroom during these pivotal times.
