Citizens of London, by Lynne Olson, is a find. During World War II, figures like Edward R. Murrow, Averell Harriman, Gil Winant (US ambassador to the Court of St James, following Joseph Kennedy), and General Eisenhower, among others, were in London. Despite sleep deprivation and poor and insufficient food, many of them regarded those years as the best in their lives. It was thrilling, there was the feeling of doing something vital, the adrenalin was rushing – and there were many romantic affairs. And when the war was over, there was a tremendous feeling of let-down; what does one do next? This book sees World War II through a different prism – the humanity of these iconic individuals.Through this book, we come to know them in a new and better way.
