Mississippi Eyes: The Story and Photography of the Southern Documentary Project by Matt Herron is a large, fascinating book of black-and-white photographs of African Americans struggling against segregation in the deep American South in the 1960s. Herron’s cameras take us from Freedom Summer 1964 in Mississippi to the struggle in Selma, Alabama, with photographs of Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace and powerful civil rights icons like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and future US Congressman John Lewis, among those photographed.
