The Future of Freedom

MONITOR STAFF PICK

Fareed Zakaria’s The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad from 2003 is as worth reading today as it was at the start of the war in Iraq. Zakaria realized even then that Washington doesn’t suffer from a lack of voices; rather, it listens so much that it dangerously values democracy over liberty. “What we need in politics today is not more democracy but less,” Zakaria writes. It’s a compelling argument, and it even applies to journalism and healthcare.
