Where Rivers Change Direction

I have been reading all of Mark Spragg's fiction ( all 4 related books), and have just discovered his memoir in the form of an essay collection, Where Rivers Change Direction, which tells of his growing up in Wyoming, and working as a very young horseman for his father who runs a dude ranch. The younger essays were of particular interest to me. They include a lot of responsibility, a lot of competence, and a lot of experience of nature at its rawest and most lovely. No wonder Spragg's novels seem so authentic. In the Wallace Stegner vein but even more so, if possible. Lovely writing.
