I certainly enjoyed Deep Creek by Dana Hand. It's a historical novel about a very American crime, the 1887 massacre of over 30 Chinese gold miners on Idaho's Snake River, and the judge who went undercover to nail their killers, knowing that to seek justice was also quite to commit likely political suicide. There is lots of contemporary resonance and also nice clear writing. I picked it up because of a positive review in Bookmarks Magazine and I'm glad that I did.
