'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' author Ransom Riggs discusses his sequel

Author Ransom Riggs will return to the world of his bestselling young adult novel “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” with a sequel titled “Hollow City” which will hit shelves this January.
“Miss Peregrine” was released in 2011 and told the story of Jacob, a boy who travels to Wales and learns more about his grandfather’s life as well as a building believed to be abandoned but which instead is home to the titular “peculiar children.”
A movie adaptation of “Miss Peregrine” is planned and “Dark Shadows” director Tim Burton is reportedly on board to direct.
Riggs said he felt that he left many opportunities for a new story open when he finished writing “Miss Peregrine.”
“I’m probably misquoting Chekhov’s dramatic adage saying if there’s a gun hanging on the wall, you’d better make it fire by the third chapter,” Riggs told Publishers Weekly. “I felt like there were a lot of guns still there for me to fire.”
The author said he feels that the sequel is an opportunity to discover more about Jacob’s friends, children who have strange powers and who came to live in Miss Peregrine’s home.
'“In book one, I took Jacob out of his comfort zone and tested his character,” Riggs said. “In 'Hollow City,' I’m taking all the characters out of the lives they’ve been secure in for years and plunging them into the unknown. That’s how you really get to know them.”
The writer is currently penning a third installment in the series.
“Hollow City” will be published on Jan. 14.
