Actor Chris Cooper will reportedly play “The Catcher in the Rye” author J.D. Salinger in an upcoming film.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” actor Cooper will star in the movie “Coming Through the Rye,” which is being directed and written by Jim Sadwith. “Rye” is based partly on Sadwith’s own encounters with Salinger and follows two young adults (Stefania Owen of “The Carrie Diaries” and Alex Wolff of “In Treatment”) trying to track down the author. The story is set in 1969 (“The Catcher in the Rye” came out in 1951).
Salinger was the subject of a movie last year with the release of the documentary “Salinger,” which was directed by Shane Salerno. Monitor film critic Peter Rainer gave the film a B, calling it “by turns fascinating and infuriating… [it’s] heavy on the psychobiography.”
