The newest edition of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S line of smartphones is likely to be revealed in less than a month.
The phone, presumably called the Samsung Galaxy S6, is expected to be the star of the show at the South Korean gadget giant’s annual “Unpacked” event on March 1. Invitations to the event, in Barcelona, Spain, were sent to reporters Wednesday.
The unveiling would coincide with Mobile World Congress, set to begin in that city the following day.
Samsung smartphones, particularly with the Galaxy S line, have emerged in the past couple of years as the chief challenger to Apple’s iPhone dominance. While the iPhone remains the single most popular smartphone both worldwide and in the United States, permutations of the Galaxy S have managed to outsell it during a few quarters in the past couple of years.
And the bigger screens on Samsung phones — particularly the vast real estate of the Galaxy Note line — are widely credited for Apple’s decision to go big on screens on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
The event invitation is black, with the words “What’s Next?” written on it and a slim, curved line that suggests the new phone might have a curved screen.
And that might not be the only big change from the Galaxy S5. Samsung engineers have reportedly been working under the umbrella of what’s being called “Project Zero” to overhaul the company’s designs.
Aside from a curved screen, rumored changes have included replacing the S5’s plastic case with metal, making the phone thinner and offering an array of colors aside from the current options of black and white.
No release date for the phone is known yet. The Galaxy S5 was announced at last year’s Unpacked event and hit stores in early April.
