Crib recall: What to do if yours is on the list
Crib recall involves some 2 million cribs from seven manufacturers because of suffocation and fall-out hazards.
CPSC
A massive crib recall was announced Thursday, which includes some 2 million cribs manufactured by seven companies, including Simmons Juvenile Products, Million Dollar Baby, LaJobi, Jardine, Evenflo, Delta Enterprise, and Child Craft Industries.
Eight crib models are included in the voluntarily recall. All but one have drop sides that can “malfunction, detach or otherwise fail, causing part of the drop side to fall out of position, and creating a space into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged or entrapped, which can lead to strangulation or suffocation,” according to a statement released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The exception – the Child Craft brand "Crib ‘N' Double Bed" – is a stationary-side crib, but it poses a similar hazard, according to the CPSC. It comes with side panels that can be assembled upside-down but appear correctly constructed, leaving a dangerous five-inch gap at the top of the crib where toddlers can become ensnarled.
For owners of the recalled drop-side cribs, the CPSC is urging parents to stop using them immediately and find a safe place for their child to sleep.
For owners of the recalled Child Craft stationary crib, the commission says parents may continue to use the crib after ensuring that it has been assembled correctly.
Below is detailed information about how to repair or replace the various recalled products. More information is available at the CPSC’s crib recall website.
Simmons Easy Drop-side cribs
About 50,000 Simmons Easy Side Drop-side cribs are included in the recall. The cribs were sold at children’s product stores and other retailers nationwide and online from January 2002 through February 2007 for between $100 and $500.
The recall was announced after 30 reports of sides that malfunctioned or detached were reported. Two children became entrapped between the drop-side and the crib mattress. Two other children fell out of their cribs when the drop side malfunctioned. No serious injuries resulting from the incidents were reported.
The affected cribs were manufactured in the United States, Indonesia, Croatia, Canada and China.
To determine if your crib is on the recall list, look for the model number printed on the bottom base of the crib’s headboard. Recalled model numbers include:

Delta drop-side cribs and cribs including wooden stabilizer bars
Delta has recalled some 747,000 drop-side cribs and all Delta cribs using wooden stabilizer bars to support the mattress platform. Three different kinds of drop-side cribs are being recalled.

The recalled cribs were sold between January 2000 and May 2009 at retailers nationwide for between $100 and $300. The company received 57 reports of malfunctioning drop sides on the cribs, resulting in three entrapments and one crib fall-out. No serious injuries were reported. CPSC is also aware of 19 reports in which stabilizer bars were installed upside-down, resulting in 10 mattress platform collapses.
The recalled Delta cribs were manufactured in China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Croatia.
If you have one of the cribs, stop using it immediately and visit the company website or the CPSC crib recall site to obtain a free repair kit. You should also check the company website to ensure that you have installed the wooden mattress support bar correctly.
Child Craft drop side cribs
An unknown number of Child Craft brand drop-side cribs sold at Babies R Us, Sears, Burlington Coat Factory, Target, and various specialty stores nationwide between January 2000 and July 2009 are being recalled.
All Child Craft drop-side cribs with the following model numbers manufactured between 2000 and 2009 are affected:
- F10151; F10171; F10181; F10281; F13311; F13761; F16001; F16011; F16131; F16661; F17001; F17701; F17731; F17801; F17811; F20161; F20181; F20191; F21041; F21081; F21091; F26131; F27301; F27771; F31061; F31701; F32901; F33301; F33601; F33801; F33901; F34101 and F35101
The drop-side hardware on these cribs can fail, causing the drop-side to detach from the crib or fall to the dropped position. If this happens, a space is created in which a child can become trapped and suffocate or strangle, the CPSC said in a statement.
The CPSC has received seven reports of the drop side failing in the Child Craft drop-side cribs resulting in children becoming entrapped.
If you have one of the recalled Child Craft models, stop using the cribs immediately and do not try to repair them. Rebates towards the purchase of a new, fixed-side Child Craft brand crib will be offered by Foundations Worldwide (which bought the brand name in July 2009). For more information and to request a rebate, call Foundations Worldwide at (866) 614-0557 anytime or visit the company’s website.
Child Craft Brand Stationary-Side Cribs
Between 40,000 and 50,000 Child Craft brand "Crib ‘N' Double Bed" full size stationary-side cribs are being recalled. The cribs’ side panels can be assembled upside-down but appear to be constructed correctly, leaving a gap at the top of the crib where a child can become trapped.
All Child Craft stationary-side cribs that come with a wooden dowel across the top of the side panels are affected. According to the CPSC, this includes, but is not limited to, crib model number 36101.
The recalled cribs were sold at Babies ‘R Us and other stores across the country between January 1998 and June 2009 and retailed at $600 and $650.
The CPSC has received four reports of children becoming stuck between the dowel and the crib's stationary front side either by their heads or their arms. Children can become entrapped on either the front or back sides of the cribs.
If you have one of the recalled cribs, examine it immediately to determine whether it has been put together correctly. You should measure the gap between the front and back panesl of the crib and the wooden dowel that runs along the top. The space between the parts should be no more than 2 and 3/8 inches wide – otherwise the panel has been attached upside-down and must be reassembled.
Consumers with these cribs should contact Foundations Worldwide for instructions and decals to attach to the crib’s sides to ensure proper assembly in the future. Contact the company at (866) 614-0557 anytime, or visit the firm's website.
