Solar storms and divine light

A Christian Science perspective.

August 31, 2011

Many people may not have been aware that a minor solar eruption took place in June. As a Monitor article, “Solar storm delivers a glancing blow to Earth – and a warning,” explains, now that developing nations are becoming more reliant on electric power, a larger eruption could have significant impact. Another solar storm, which took place on Aug. 9, was the largest that has occurred in five years. During these kinds of events, power grids could potentially act as huge antennas for geomagnetic currents, causing major blackouts.

The article also mentions how the US and British governments are collaborating on a space weather warning system. While this and other research is under way to address the situation, our prayers can play an active role in dissolving fear and feeling God’s protecting power. They can also support efforts to find new ways to safeguard electrical grids from solar storms.

The Bible tells us: “The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore” (Ps. 121:6-8). We are never for an instant separated from God’s loving care and counsel, no matter where we are or what we are doing.

God is always communicating with us – sending us spiritual ideas that can help protect us. God, the divine Mind, is the source of infinite intelligence. Every idea needed for a solution is already included in Mind. So man, as the child of God, includes, by reflection, creative problem-solving insight.

In “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” Mary Baker Eddy wrote: “Spirit imparts the understanding which uplifts consciousness and leads into all truth....

"This understanding is not intellectual, is not the result of scholarly attainments; it is the reality of all things brought to light” (p. 505). Spiritual understanding can lead to new ways to safeguard our power supply.

Neither fear nor ignorance can keep us from receiving Mind’s ideas. And nothing can confuse or distort the clarity of Mind’s revelation.

Mind also provides the resources and clears the way for execution of its directives. So neither corruption, politics, greed, nor any other obstacle can prevent governments or companies from making wise decisions or appropriate innovations.

Already there are signs of progress. Governments are collaborating on research. Scientists are improving ways of forecasting solar storms. Our prayers can contribute to more progress and perhaps lead to new ways to safely harness the sun’s energy for productive purposes.
