Being remembered for throwing pies in people's faces?
Well, that might be the first thing that people recall when they think of Soupy Sales. The legendary TV funnyman passed on yesterday in New York and leaves behind a career of great stories, much laughter, and yes – pies in the face.
Estimates are that Soupy was involved in more than 20,000 pies thrown – either as the thrower or the recipient. We're not sure who had the job of counting all those instances.
Sure, there's far more to his career than hurling baked pastries into people's mugs. He appeared on TV thousands of times, was a guest host for The Tonight Show, had a very successful program of his own, and even had a couple top-ten albums. You can read his full obituary here.
But the pie-in-the-face – that was Soupy's main schtick. Big-time A-listers like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. would line up to get hit by one.
But was it really that funny? It was. It's one thing to be told how funny someone is. It's another thing to experience it. And with YouTube, you can re-live it or see it for the first time.
Let's go through a few of them.
First, a compilation someone did on Soupy's career (with emphasis on the throwing pies):

Next up, a conversation Soupy had with FOX commentator Bill O'Reilly:

Finally, a look back at when Soupy was kicked off the air. Back in 1965, Soupy told kids to go through their mom's purses and send him the "green paper" that had likenesses of the presidents on them. Pretty tame stuff compared to what you see on TV now. But nonetheless, very funny. Soupy discusses it in this clip:
