Death grip it was not. But not long after Apple released the iPhone 4S, plenty of users began reporting issues with the battery life on the new iPhone, which reportedly drained at an inconveniently rapid rate. The complaints kicked off on October 15, on the official Apple forum, and continued for a solid few weeks, eventually prompting Apple to release a statement.
"A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices," Apple reps told Ina Fried of All Things D. "We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks." Today, that update arrives, in the form of of iOS 5.0.1. If you're an iPhone user, you should receive a download prompt the next time you sync your device with iTunes.
The update weighs in at 790 MB in size and takes ten minutes or so to download, TechCrunch says. But does it actually improve the battery life on the new iPhone? According to Wired, it most certainly does.
"Frankly the difference is nothing short of amazing," one reader told Wired. "To go almost an entire day without a change in the meter reading seems unbelievable. Where before I could almost watch the battery drain, now it doesn’t move at all."
A quick perusal of Twitter and tech blogs turns up similar results: iOS 5.0.1 does the job. It also apparently includes a few security updates, the details of which Apple has posted here.
