Serving up hits

Sara Bareilles is renowned for writing musical hits such as “Brave” and “Love Song.” Now she’s written a hit musical. Bareilles’s new album, What’s Inside, includes songs she wrote for “Waitress,” a Broadway-bound musical about a waitress with a knack for baking pies who feels trapped in her small-town diner. The exuberant piano stomp of “Opening Up” makes for a great curtain raiser. The heartbreak vocal of “She Used to Be Mine” deserves multiple encores. “What’s Inside” will be available Nov. 6.

Virtual eye candy 

Follow pastry chef and graphic designer Tal Spiegel through the patisseries of Paris and virtually sample the city’s many sweet treats. On his Desserted in Paris Instagram account, Spiegel shares daily photos of artisanal creations, including a rainbow-striped éclair, a towering carrot and orange tart, and a hipster macaron sporting a mustache. Healing after war

In time for Veterans Day, a new PBS special centers on a reunion between American and Japanese veterans of the Battle of Iwo Jima for the 70th anniversary of the conflict. The men who attend foster fellowship with those they once considered enemies. Viewers should be advised that the documentary deals with the gruesome realities of war. Iwo Jima: From Combat to Comrades airs Nov. 10 at 8 p.m.   

Head games

Like much of studio Pixar’s other work, Inside Out dazzled audiences. Young Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) learns how to handle her emotions, including Joy (Amy Poehler) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) after her family moves. When Joy and Sadness get lost, they must find their way back to Headquarters, and while doing so they end up learning about each feeling’s importance. It’s out on DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 3.

Jazz for peanuts

“The Peanuts Movie,” in theaters Nov. 2, will give the familiar Charles Schulz gang room to run on the silver screen. But some viewers may miss the playful soundtrack from the TV specials. A new album, Peanuts Greatest Hits: Vince Guaraldi Trio, from Fantasy Records satisfies that nostalgic longing with favorites such as “Happiness Is,” “Great Pumpkin Waltz,” and “Christmas Time Is Here” all gathered in one happy place.
