Rockin’ gumbo

On Live at the Barn, the Wood Brothers pretty much burn the late Band member Levon Helm’s Woodstock studio to the ground. Oliver Wood (guitar and lead vocals) and his younger brother Chris (stand-up bass, vocals, and harmonica) team up with multi-instrumentalist and superb drummer Jano Rix to create a supercharged gumbo of blues, funk, and rustic rock that will slap an indelible smile on your face from the first note to the last.

Poised actor

In the shadow of war, life begins anew in a Congolese maternity ward

Jim Broadbent stars in the film adaptation of The Sense of an Ending, which is based on Julian Barnes’s Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name. Tony (Broadbent) finds himself attempting to unravel a mystery about his college experience involving a friend (Joe Alwyn) and a young woman (portrayed by Charlotte Rampling in the present) with whom they were both romantically involved. Monitor film critic Peter Rainer writes that Broadbent is “an actor of ... poise and humor.” The movie is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Music and visuals

Fans of Mozart can add a visual component to their enjoyment with a video by filmmaker Matthew Rycroft titled Siege of Salzburg. The composer’s “Lacrimosa,” from his Requiem Mass in D Minor, accompanies shots of Salzburg, Austria, Mozart’s birthplace, so that beautiful footage complements the legendary music. New Gaudi

Spanish architect Gaudi is well known for the colorful visuals found at the structures he worked on such as Barcelona’s Sagrada Família and the Park Güell. Now, Casa Vicens, the first house to be created by the artist, will be opening for the first time in the fall; you can get a preview from the Casa Vicens YouTube channel, found at http://bit.ly/casavicenschannel. The video on restoring the ceramic parts of the building is particularly intriguing.
