'The Goonies 2': New developments on a sequel to the '80s classic

Will a sequel to the 1985 adventure movie “The Goonies” happen?

The director of the original film, Richard Donner, recently stated in an interview with TMZ that he is working on it – when asked by TMZ about the amount of comic book movies currently being made, he said, “If you call ‘Goonies’ a comic book, we’re doing a sequel.”

And now Donner says director Steven Spielberg, who is credited with creating the story for the original film, has come up with a new plotline for the planned sequel.

“Hopefully we’re going to get this done," Donner said of creating the new movie in an interview with TMZ. "[Spielberg] came up with another storyline. He's right on.”

When asked if any cast members from the original film would return, he said, “It’s up to them. If they have any sense, they will. If they don’t, they won’t.”

Two stars of the first movie, “Lord of the Rings” actor Sean Astin and Corey Feldman, have commented before on the possible film – Astin told the website IGN in 2012 that “it will happen. I'm 1000 percent certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.” Meanwhile, Feldman tweeted, “I believe they [are] workin hard [to] make it the best script poss[ible] and if and when they feel confident [to] share w us, [you] will know!”

The first film starred Astin, Feldman, “Labor Day” actor Josh Brolin, and “Raising Hope” actress Martha Plimpton as a group of children and teenagers who search for a treasure rumored to have been hidden by a pirate, trying to find it before a group of criminals locates it first.

Donner was also behind the 1978 film “Superman” and the four “Lethal Weapon” movies as well as the 1988 holiday film “Scrooged.” Meanwhile, Spielberg was nominated for a Best Director Oscar in 2012 for his movie “Lincoln.”
