'Twin Peaks': New episodes are reportedly coming to Showtime

New episodes, which will be directed by 'Twin Peaks' co-creator David Lynch and will be produced and written by Lynch and 'Peaks' co-creator Mark Frost, will air as a limited series in 2016.

“Twin Peaks” is reportedly returning as a limited series that will air on Showtime.

According to Deadline, a nine-episode show will premiere in 2016. The episodes will come from the original “Twin Peaks” creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost. Lynch will direct every installment and Lynch and Frost are producing and writing every episode. 

“Peaks” aired from 1990 to 1991 on ABC and followed Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), an FBI agent who was looking into the death of Laura Palmer, which occurred in the Washington town of the title. The series co-starred Sherilyn Fenn, Lara Flynn Boyle, Jack Nance, and Russ Tamblyn, among others. 

According to Deadline, the new episodes in the show will take place in the modern day and will extend the story of the original episodes.

“Frost emphasized that the new episodes will not be a remake or reboot but will reflect the passage of time since viewers last checked in with key characters,” Variety TV managing editor Cynthia Littleton wrote.

“For those followers of the show who felt bereft when the show ended where it did all those years ago are going to like where it goes from here,” Frost told Variety. “And we hope that a lot of people who haven’t been to Twin Peaks yet are going to be equally interested in where the story goes from where we left off.” 

When asked by Deadline whether MacLachlan will return for the new episodes, Frost said, “We hope to have more to say about that soon. I think you’ll have the answer to that sooner rather than later.”

And as for more new “Twin Peaks” after the nine episodes, Frost told Variety, “The proof will be in the pudding. If we have a great time doing it and everybody loves it and they decide there’s room for more, I could see it going that way.”
