Has “The Wolf of Wall Street” actress Margot Robbie signed on to play comic book character Harley Quinn in the upcoming “Suicide Squad” comic book movie?

The “Suicide Squad” film was recently announced by studio Warner Bros. and is set to be released in 2016, according to the Hollywood Reporter. David Ayer of last month’s film “Fury” is set to direct. In the Suicide Squad storyline released by DC Comics, supervillains are sent on jobs for the government and receive lesser punishments in return.

According to The Wrap, “The Dark Knight Rises” actor Tom Hardy and Will Smith are in discussions to star in the film and Jared Leto, who won a Best Supporting Oscar last year for his role in the film “Dallas Buyers Club,” is considering appearing in the film as the Joker. Actor Heath Ledger won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the character in the 2008 film “The Dark Knight.” Meanwhile, actor Jesse Eisenberg is "expected" to portray "Superman" villain Lex Luthor in the film, according to The Wrap.

Now the website Collider is reporting that actress Margot Robbie, who starred in the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” is set to play the character Harley Quinn in the film. Collider cites unnamed sources and says that Robbie has signed on. In the comics, Harley Quinn is romantically involved with the Joker.

In its announcement last month of upcoming projects, Warner Bros. revealed a slew of comic book-based films that will be coming to theaters over the next several years. In addition to “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which will also be released in 2016, a stand-alone “Wonder Woman” film starring actress Gal Gadot (who’s playing the character in “Dawn” as well) will be released in 2017, while the movie “Justice League Part One” will come to theaters in 2017 as well. Other superhero films will include an “Aquaman” movie starring “Game of Thrones” actor Jason Momoa in 2018; a movie about “The Flash” starring Ezra Miller, also due to be released in 2018; a “Shazam” film to debut in 2019; the second “Justice League” film for 2019; a “Cyborg” movie starring Ray Fisher, set for 2020; and a new “Green Lantern” movie, which will be released in 2020 and follows the 2011 film about the superhero starring Ryan Reynolds, which was not well-received critically.

Comic book movies continue to be big business – according to the website Box Office Mojo, the three highest-grossing movies of 2014 so far are "Guardians of the Galaxy," which is based on Marvel characters, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which tells the story of the Marvel superhero, and "The Lego Movie," which featured comic book characters such as Batman.
