The HBO smash fantasy series "Game of Thrones" is coming to a movie theater near you.
According to Variety, the final two episodes in the show's most recent season – its fourth – and a never-before-seen trailer for the show's upcoming fifth season will be screened in IMAX movie theaters from Jan. 23 to Jan. 29. The show will screen at 150 movie theaters.
"The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format,” Pamela Levine, chief marketing officer at HBO, said in a statement. “We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.”
"Thrones" is based on the fantasy book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" by author George R.R. Martin. It centers on the struggle for power in the fictional world of Westeros and features a very large cast, including actors Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
Its fourth season concluded this past June and according to the New York Times, the upcoming fifth season will premiere in April.
Fans will remember that one of the episodes that will hit the big screen is the installment titled “The Watchers on the Wall,” which did not switch between storylines like most “Thrones” episodes but instead focused solely on the efforts of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and his comrades to stop their enemies, the Wildlings, from getting past their fighting force, the Night’s Watch. The episode includes many battle sequences.
“Thrones” is critically acclaimed and has been nominated multiple times for Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmy Awards, where Dinklage secured an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series prize for his work as clever courtier Tyrion Lannister.
