'Inside Out' trailer shows that emotions are what Pixar does best

'Inside Out' stars Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, and Mindy Kaling as some of the feelings living inside a young girl named Riley. The film will be released this June.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming Pixar movie “Inside Out.” 

“Inside” centers on a girl named Riley (Kaitlyn Dias), whose family has recently moved to San Francisco and who is trying to make sense of her new feelings and experiences. Some of the characters in the movie are her feelings, including Joy (actress Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black of “The Daily Show”), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith of “The Office”). Kyle MacLachlan and Diane Lane voice Riley’s parents.

During the movie, Joy and Sadness must set out to explore Riley’s mind (the trailer shows such destinations as “Imagination Land” and “Dream Productions”) while the other emotions try to keep things normal for Riley. 

The clip also includes a scary clown, Riley’s mind experiencing a “brain freeze,” and Anger becoming enraged by some of San Francisco’s food offerings. “Congratulations, San Francisco,” he says, looking at a broccoli-covered pizza slice. “You’ve ruined pizza.” 

Chances are this movie will be a hit because emotions are what Pixar does best. Film critic Peter Rainer called the section of the opening of their 2009 film “Up” which summarizes an entire marriage in a wordless sequence “probably the best thing the studio has ever done.” Pixar’s movies often have resonant emotional themes such as that of a father trying to learn to let his son go in 2003’s “Finding Nemo” (their second-highest grossing movie of all time, according to the website Box Office Mojo) and of a boy going to college and moving on from his childhood in 2010’s “Toy Story 3” (Pixar’s highest-grossing film). 

And co-director and writer Pete Docter said that the inspiration for “Inside” came from his own life, according to Variety. He found that his own daughter became quieter as she got older. “There is something that is lost when you grow up,” he said. 

“Inside Out” will be released this June.
