'Joy': See the trailer for the new David O. Russell film with Jennifer Lawrence

Lawrence stars as an inventor in the upcoming film, which will be released this December. Lawrence and her 'Joy' co-stars Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro have worked with Russell multiple times.

A trailer has been released for the upcoming movie “Joy,” which stars Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro.

Lawrence portrays Joy Mangano, a real-life figure who invented the Miracle Mop, among other innovations. Cooper reportedly portrays a worker at the Home Shopping Network.

The movie will reportedly be released on Dec. 25, and reunites Russell, Lawrence, Cooper, and De Niro after the three actors starred in the 2012 film “Silver Linings Playbook.” They all also appeared, though De Niro was in a minor role, in Russell’s 2013 film “American Hustle.” 

Russell is only one of the directors in Hollywood who has made a habit of frequently working with the same cast members. Other notable helmers who have done so in recent memory include Martin Scorsese, who has worked with actor Leonardo DiCaprio on several films (before that, he also worked with De Niro regularly); Tim Burton, who often works with actors Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter; and Wes Anderson, whose films often star actors such as Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, and Edward Norton. 

Russell himself spoke recently about the advantages of teaming up repeatedly with thespians. "I have a shorthand with these actors," he said. "We share an enormous amount of trust and affection, and it allows us to take risks and we have taken bigger risks in ['Joy']." 

Meanwhile, Depp said that his collaborations with Burton, which have included such films as "Edward Scissorhands," "Ed Wood," "Sweeney Todd," and "Dark Shadows," comes from an interest in the same subject matter. "We relate to characters who are a little off," he said. "People who don't feel like they fit in anywhere. I think that's why we work well together." Actress Bella Heathcote, who starred in "Shadows" with Depp, said of the relationship, "It's almost symbiotic. They finish each other's sentences." 

"I don't think we could finish a coherent thought without help from each other," Depp responded.
