The latest British royal baby has been born: It’s a girl!
Kate Middleton, Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge and the wife of Prince William, gave birth to a little girl on Saturday at 8:34 a.m. (3:34 a.m. ET). This is the couple’s second child, turning one-year-old Prince George into a big brother. Both children were born at St. Mary’s Hospital, West London.
When was the last time there was a little princess in the palace, and what does it mean for the line of succession to England’s throne?
The Kensington Palace announced the birth of the 8 pounds 3 ounce baby, whose name has not yet been released, on Twitter. Prince William was present for the birth, and the birth was reportedly free of complications.
The newborn daughter, whose name has not yet been released, is now fourth in line to England’s throne. She follows her brother George, father William, and grandfather Prince Charles. Prince Harry, William’s brother, will now be fifth in the royal lineup.
Prime Minister David Cameron expressed his congratulations via Twitter:
The last princess born into the royal family was 25 years ago, with the birth of Princess Eugenie, daughter of Prince Andrew (third child of Queen Elizabeth II), in 1990. However, while that may not be too long ago, the last time a Princess of Cambridge was born was nearly 180 years ago.
With the newest addition to the family being Queen Elizabeth’s fifth great-grandchild, London residents eagerly awaited the announcement. The birth was nearly a week overdue, but the birth was relatively swift, lasting only three hours compared to the 10 hours it took to deliver Prince George.
Crowds had gathered outside the hospital to await the birth, and when the announcement was made the crowd cheered. Outside of Buckingham Palace, two footmen placed an ornate, gold easel announcing the duchess was “delivered” of a daughter, and included the details.
Many people expressed their excitement on Twitter.
Now, there's anticipation about the name of the newest princess – which hasn't been announced yet. London bookmakers place the following among the top contenders: Charlotte, Alice, Victoria, and Elizabeth, followed by Diana, Eleanor, and Alexandra, reported Reuters.
