Winter Olympics 2014 TV schedule: What to watch Monday

Women's alpine skiing, speed skating, and men's freestyle moguls are today. Norway's top biathlon athlete chases an historic 13th Olympic medal.

Olympic action continues today with marquee races in women’s alpine skiing, men’s freestyle ski moguls, and the start of short and long track speed skating. 

US speed skating stars Shani Davis and J.R. Celski make their debut in Sochi today and Norwegian Ole Einar Bjoerndalen looks to break the record for the most decorated Winter Olympian of all time by medaling in the men’s 12.5 km biathalon. 

NBC will air an afternoon tape-delayed broadcast from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. EST and a primetime broadcast at 8 p.m. Its affiliate networks, NBC Sports, USA, MSNBC, and CNBC will air coverage throughout the day, and all events will be streamed live for cable-subscribers at nbcolympics.com.

Here are today's top events:

Women’s alpine skiing super-combined

Women’s downhill skiing makes its debut at these Games with the super-combined downhill and slalom. The event – a combination of runs on the downhill course and the slalom (a course marked by flags and gates that are spaced closer together) – tests the all-around skills of the skiers. Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch, the current world champion and defending Olympic champion in the event is the one to beat. Look out for Canadian Marie-Michele Gagnon, who won the final World Cup race of the season and for American Julia Mancuso, who won silver in the event in Vancouver.

The event aired live at 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. EST this morning and will be replayed on NBC’s primetime broadcast. See the final results here.

Men’s freestyle skiing moguls

Canadians Alex Bilodeau and Mikael Kingsbury will try to match Canada’s one-two finish in the women’s freestyle moguls as they continue their battle for supremacy in the sport. The Canadians each have three World Cup victories under their belts this year and will look for the Olympics final to be the tie breaker. Patrick Deeneen of the US will look for redemption after falling on his final jump in Vancouver. Bradley Wilson, the brother of Bryon Wilson, the Vancouver bronze medalist in the event, will also compete for Team USA.

The event will be streamed live at 1 p.m. EST and replayed on NBC’s afternoon and primetime broadcasts. 

Biathlon

Norway’s Bjoerndalen already made history Saturday when he tied the record for the most Winter Olympic medals by a single athlete (12) and became the oldest Winter Olympic champion in his gold-medal winning race in the biathlon 10-km sprint. Today he has a chance to break the record with a medal of any color. Biathlon is the only Winter Olympic sport that the US has never medaled in. American Tim Burke, who won World Cup bronze in this event earlier this year, will try and change that. 

Biathlon is a combination of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting and has been a Winter Olympic event since 1960, according to Sochi2014.com.

The event will be streamed live at 10 a.m. EST and replayed on NBC’s afternoon broadcast. 

Men’s short track speed skating

The big question of these Games is who will step up to take Apolo Anton Ohno’s place as the face of the sport. Ohno retired from the sport after winning his eighth career Olympic medal in Vancouver and becoming the most decorated American Winter Olympian. Ohno’s US teammate J.R. Celski, who won bronze in this event in Vancouver, looks to step up today. Also keep an eye out for Victor Ahn, the former Olympic champion for Korea who now skates for Russia. The South Koreans field a deep team and have a chance for multiple medals. 

No medals will be awarded in women’s short track today; the women’s 3,000-meter relay semifinals begins.

Men’s short track was streamed live at 7:15 am this morning and will be replayed on NBC primetime. 

Men’s speed skating 5,000-meter

US skater Shani Davis skates for the first time today. Davis is looking to make history later in the Games by being the first American to win three straight gold medals in the same event in the Winter Olympics, but that event – the 1,000 meters – is scheduled for later this week. Davis isn’t favored in this event,which is speed skating’s shortest. The favorites are Korea’s Tae Bum Mo, Holland’s Michel Mulder, and Japan’s Joji Kato.

The event will be streamed live at 10 a.m. EST and replayed on NBC primetime.
