Kennedy wins backing of auto union president

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D) of Massachusetts Tuesday collected the endorsement of Douglas Fraser, the United Automobile Workers president, and told cheering union delegates that his election would put a "real Democrat" in the White House for the first time since 1968.

Mr. Fraser's decision to endorse Senator Kennedy over President Carter and California Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. was made at this time apparently to boost the Massachusetts Democrat's stock before next week's crucial Iowa caucuses.
