20 to 25 inmates killed in New Mexico prison riot
| Santa Fe, N.M.
New Mexico state prison officials said Sunday that as many as 20 to 25 inmates may have been killed in a jail riot in which convicts seized most of the prison buildings and several guards as hostages. At least three guards and 30 prisoners were injured in the uprising, which began Saturday at the prison near here.
A force of 150 policemen and national guardsman in riot gear, aided by dogs and helicopters, surronded the prison but held off attempting to go inside.
This is the worst US prison riot since the violence in a New York state prison at Attica in 1971.
