Compromise in Chicago settles teacher dispute

The Board of Education and the Chicago Teachers Union agreed on a compromise contract early Sunday after a round of marathon negotiations in Mayor Jane M. Byrne's office, tentatively ending a two-week work stoppage by teachers.

Mayor Byrne, who had called all sides together in attempts to resolve the dispute, said she was hopeful schools would be open for classes on Monday.

The proposal, which must be ratified by the union's 25,000 members, restores 300 of the 683 teaching positions and all 200 of the teachers'-aides positions that were cut in a $60 million budget slash.

The Fire Fighters Union and city officials have agreed to mediation to settle their contract dispute. The first session was scheduled for Monday morning.
