"I have an ouch"

The two-year-old's voice came over the phone: "Nena, I have an ouch!" The grandmother spoke comforting words, turning the child to God and His protective care. The truth "God loves you" has been an antidote for many an "ouch".

For some people, life is a constant hurt. They may search in vain down many avenues for comfort. But real healing comes only from God, who is divine Love.

How do we understand God and eliminate our particular " ouch"? A good starting point is the fact that God is the only power. When grasped sufficiently to change out thinking, this truth can reverse any hold that discord has on us.

Some time ago a large portion of my body became inflamed. I reminded myself that God, divine Spirit, created man; I could not deviate from perfection, for Spirit is unalterably perfect. This was the truth. I did not have to agree with the "ouch." It was not a fact but a false belief.

In her writings, Mary Baker Eddy n1 makes clear the necessity of dealing with desease in the mental realm. She writes: "Without the so-called human mind, there can be no inflammatory nor torpid action of the system. Remove the error, and you destroy its effects." n2

Sickness, no matter what name it goes under, is a supposition, an illusion, a dream. The need in Christian healing is always to identify man as spiritual, God's idea, inviolable -- not bordered by matter. I needed to awake from the dream of life within physical limits and laws, claim my rights, and look to the facts. I didn't have to grovel in the belief that I had been disinherited of the great good that was rightfully mine, the health that reflects infinite Soul.

The Bible reads, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." n3 Yes, we have to deal with "serpents and scorpions," mental and physical evils, but the power to contend with these tribulations is God-given. Sickness has only the strength we believe it to have. It has no real, no divine origin.

Destructive mortal beliefs such as disease would have us scrutinize them and conclude that they are necessary, are of the times, are in control. Truth destroys disease; it always has and always will. Man's inheritance as God's perfect idea is the eternal power of His law. This fact, understood, neutralizes the venomous scorpions of false beliefs.

Jesus met the hurts and tribulations of people through divine Science. The Bible states of his contact with the multitudes, "Jesus . . . was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick." n4 Jesus put down evils of all kinds, even death, and proved that man is God's offspring.

I turned wholeheartedly to the supporting comfort of the healing Christ, God's message of His tender nature. And before long I realized with great clarity a marvelous fact: I am in perfect harmony with God's universe.
