Being and Work

Millions are unemployed; millions more have work but do not enjoy it. Yet there isn't an ism or an ology that can solve these interlocking problems. Only a radically new approach ever will.

Many an idealistic young (or older) person faced with unemployment or underemployment asks, "Where do I fit in?" Christian Science says: Take a new, unlimited, spiritual view of yourself. You are right if you have a larger concept of work than just a means of existing. But refuse to limit your capabilities. For a goal far better than any other, explore a God-oriented approach to work.

Quite naturally, everyone is looking for maximum job satisfaction. The man who must have had it in the highest degree was Christ Jesus. He earned no salary, possessed nothing but his clothes, had no place he could call his own. Yet he lived the most effective life ever known. In only three years he healed uncounted thousands and brought to the world the way of liberation from mortality's bondage. He said: "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work," n1 and "I can of mine own self do nothing." n2

Here lies the secret of his success. The only real power in the universe is infinite Love, God, the Father of all. Jesus knew it.He knew his power came from his spiritual relation to God.The results, recorded in the New Testament, are compellingly vivid.

God is the source of harmony, and He directs the paths of all who turn toward Him, learn to trust in and listen for His guidance, This immortal source of harmony is eternal Mind, intelligence itself.

After her own long search eventually led to an immediate and desperately neede healing, Mary Baker Eddy knew she had found the laws supporting Jesus' way of working and his method of healing. She proved that the same spiritual laws, when understood today, are able to repeat the same works.

In her writings Mrs. Eddy uses different names for her discovery as occasion demands. "Science of being" is one of them. Not the Science of doingm -- although a right concept of being leads to right doing. In Science and Health with Key to the Scripturesm she tell us, "A knowledge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities and possibilities of man." n3

Science and Health,m the Christian Science textbook, can take us by the hand and show us, from within the inspired pages of the Bible, what being really is, and our part in it. Putting spiritual being first as Jesus did allows all else to fall into place. It helps us get rid of the fear that our little store of mortal expertise isn't enough. It lights the way to some place, or places, where our talents are needed. We see ourselves as already established in God. And we know we can reflect His ideas and attributes wherever and whenever we need them. What better way is there to work?
