US military freighters to be posted off S. Asia
| Los Angeles
The United States plans to send seven freighters with military supplies to Southwest Asia in response to the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Harold Brown said Monday.
In a speech to the World Affairs Council here, he said the ships would be ready for deployment this summer and would back up existing US forces in the Arabian Sea. The ships will be positioned within a few day's sailing distance of the Persian Gulf-Arabian Sea area.
