You're special!
There's justification for believing you have a special purpose to fulfill. In the Bible, after descanting on the wonders of the universe, the Psalmist asks, "What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet." n1
n1 Psalms 8:4-6;
The Psalmist clearly perceived something of the priceless nature and unlimited potential of God's highest creation, man. The more we discern this real man, the more we will find ourselves endowed with the dominion of intelligence over ignorance, of love over hate, of courage over fear, and of harmony over discord -- in fact, we'll exercise dominion over the whole earth. Man possesses this dominion individually as well as collectively. And each one of us has the ability to express in in his own unique way.
Christ Jesus illustrated this in his work with his disciples and he multitudes. He showed simple fishermen their spiritual capacity to become fishers of men. He awakened a helpless beggar to his innate ability to be an active, useful citizen. He healed the sick and the sinner, enabling them to claim their God-given right to health and self-respect.
What was it that Christ Jesus saw and valued in each individual? Was it not the spiritual, eternal selfhood that God has created -- man in His own image? The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes this: "Immortal man was and is God's image or idea, even the infinite expression of infinite Mind, and immortal man is coexistent and coeternal with that Mind. . . . The spiritual man's consciousness and individuality are reflections of God. They are the emanations of Him who is Life, Truth, and Love." n2

Your previous, unique identity is much more than a material personality. It is the eternal, individual expression of all the infinite, spiritual qualities emanating from Soul, the divine Mind, God. You are the expression, in your own unique way, of the intelligence and wisdom of mind, the energy and vitality of Spirit, the compassion and kindness of divine Love, and the radiant qualities of Soul.
If you don't feel special and needed, then your real need is to discover more about who you really are. And to bring out in your life, in your thoughts and deeds, what you are discovering.
Do you feel you have worthwhile ideas and talents but lack the ability to express them? Or that you have the ability, but lack the opportunity? Remember Moses. A shepherd in the hills, he received a call from God to lead the children of Israel out of slavery. Moses replied, "Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?" The answer came, "Certainly I will be with thee." n3
n3 Exodus 3:11, 12.
The "I" that was going to accomplish this great task was not Moses, but, the great I AM. Knowing that God works with us, that He gives us our talents and the opportunity to use them, silences the fears that would say we can't exercise them, or the apathy that doesn't want to. Knowing who the real "I" is, and knowing we are essential to this great "I" as its own distinct expression, enables us to prove in daily life that we can be a blessing.And as we prove to ourselves that we really are special, we'll discover that everyone else is, too.
DAILY BIBLE VERSE Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands. Isaiah 49:15, 16
