To the real estate editor: If you take care of the plumbing the rest of the house will stay safe. However, do not leave any water in breakable bottles or glasses because if the water freezes, it expands and breaks the glass.

Fruit jars inside cupboards keep satisfactorily if there is some syrup because the freezing point is [lower] than plain water.
