Madrid rejects demands to free Basque guerrillas

The Spanish government Sunday rejected demands by Basque guerrillas who threatened to bomb the country's vacation resorts if 18 Basque detainees were not released by mid-day today (June 23). ETA carried out a similar campaign last summer, setting off 14 bombs in Mediterranean resorts. They stopped the campaign after 7 people were killed and more than 100 injured in blasts at Madrid's airport and two main railway stations.
