Phil Weld, a former newspaper publisher from Gloucester, Mass., Wednesday became the first US yachtsman to win the prestigious quadrennial race from Plymouth, England, to Newport, R.I. His 51-foot trimaran won the sixth Singlehanded Transatlantic Race with record speed, slashing more than 61 hours off the record of 20 days, 13 1/4 hours set in the 1972 race, won by France.
